Can I use an American check in Spain?
I am leaving for Spain soon on study abroad. I am obviously going to take my credit and debit cards as well as cash, but I wanted to know if I could bring my checkbook to pay rent on my flat.
If not, is there another way to wire money? I asked my bank a few weeks ago and they said that I would have to be present in person in the US in order to wire money abroad, which I just don't believe.
Another idea I had was to take out a large cashier's check and use that to open a Spanish checking account. Do you think that would work?
Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!
The first answer is good for everyday. Using an ATM is basically my plan. The main concern I have is that I would like to pay for a semester's worth of rent all at once. This would be a couple thousand dollars, which I doubt I can just suck out of an ATM. Any other ideas?
Direct debit is the best way to pay for your regular outgoings. It is your responsibility to pay your bills here in Spain. They will send reminders, but they don't always do so. Failure to pay a bill will incur a penalty.
All other methods of payment are by credit or debit card and of course cash. You will find that smaller businesses and local tradesmen will ONLY deal in cash.
I have a Spanish bank account. I haven't written a cheque (check) out for over two years.
Up until recently, you could only buy a house in Spain provided over 50% was in cash.
To answer your question about US checks. The answer is no.
