Extreme, who me?

Add comment December 31st, 2006

So i’m stumblin’ along, as there is very little on tv to watch, and lo-and-behold I found something I had to post about. First I found this site and it’s pictures, then read and was blown away by this first-person perspective doin’ it on a mountain bike. I like going blazing-fast on my bikes (heck, on/in anything) but these parameters of this etreme ride are more than I would ever be stupid enough to do. 6300 3600 meters down, that’s the part that warns this speed-freak away.

Bikeshop window-shopping…(i need/i want)

So my buddy Brian is looking to upgrade his bicycletta someday. Here’s the bike I’d reccommend for him and here’s a review from the journalists we can trust. I’d have started with this bike one if I were in your shoes. But since I’ve a bunch of miles and 19 years with my current rig (mine’s got way better late 80’s pastel colors!) I’m ready to upgrade to my last road bike. Eventually I’ll be driving one of these and loving every minute of the “long-course” rides we are thinking about for next season. Here’s a section of reviews on it. Not sure if they have one big-enough for me though, wouldn’t that be a bummer! If they do I would surely love to receive it as a valentine’s gift, but for now I’ll just give God my heart’s desire for it, and maybe someday….

Ride plans for 2007…

1 comment December 29th, 2006

So, finally I’ve got a brother/pal to hold me accountable to some plans I’ve had for a few years. Next year Brian and I will do our first century together. the Santa Fe Century is our target, and I’ve figured a great way to get in shape/trained for it. This past spring I raised support for Diabetes research and rode in the Tour De Cure event, so in order to help another organization and get the kind of help in the training process I figured raising support for blood cancers was a double-good cause. This organization is how Brian and I are going to help raise support for blood cancers and get ready for the Century.

After the SF ride, next up is the Albuquerque CenturyThis site has info about last year’s ride, and from other things I’ve heard about it this year’s century should be really great. Another ride I’d like to do raises funds for the Davis Phinney foundation. It’s the Copper Triangle Alpine Classic This one is a doozie! 78-miles, 3 mountain passes, and just over 5k of elevation gain.  Hopefully I can manage it as well, being that the scenery in those parts would be spectacular, especially by bicycle.

So if you ride and think you can hang and want to join me, or just want to be part of the cheering section and help out here and there I’d appreciate a comment, at least by that I’ll know someone reads these posts.

Snow be fallin’

Add comment December 29th, 2006

Hello,

I know I’ve been slackin’ again with my posts, and you would be too with the balance of work/home issues (chores, etc) and a 9-month-old in residence. That 9-month-old is really something though, so wonderful to be a dad.

Last Wednesday we got hit with about 7″ inches of snow. Pretty neat to see everything covered with white. Right now we’re in the midst of another storm, and out my office window the rose-bush has 3 or 4″ inches piled up on it’s thicker sections. My yard has at least 4″ just beyond and the sky is releasing snowflakes non-stop. the snow right now is different than last week, or even just this morning. Before it was giant flakes that came down pretty strong, and now it’s as if it’s raining in slow-motion. the flakes are small and consistantly falling. Should be pretty deep by the time they say this will pass through. Weather advisory says it’ll be done at 5am tomorrow.

This time a snow-man will be in our yard if I can finangle it. We should have enough snow to do it.

Until next time….

12/30 5am UPDATE: So far this storm has at least a FOOT of snow in the yard.  It’s surreal so soon I’ll post pictures and possibly video to show how gnarly it is!

a few new snappies….

Thankfulness…

Add comment December 20th, 2006

Are you thankful? Thankfulness isn’t popular it seems in our culture unless it’s the 4th week of November and someone “gives” some thanks for something that has benefitted themselves. What I’m referring to is a behavior of thankfulness. An “attitude of Gratitude”. What God has lead me through and blessed me with in the past 10 years has truely been remarkable. What He has done for all of us on the Cross has eternal signifigance. Funny how thanksgiving seems like just the last “hurdle” for retailers to wait for before the tempting and frenzied sales begin. Christmas to me is a huge thankful-party, not simply for the parties, gifts, and great food, but for the gift of Jesus our Redeemer, lover of my soul.
A new perspective on a common “Christian” statement has crossed my brow of late. “____ is the reason for the season”. Now what do you think belongs in the blank? The quick answer for anyone who’s heard the statement before would be “Jesus”. For the longest time I thought that was a correct as correct could be. To think deeper on the subject, I think you would have to agree that what belongs there is your name, my name, all of our names. Jesus came to DIE for our sins. To be the lamb that takes away the sin of the world. When the angels came to the shepards in the field and said those words to them (as the Christmas carol mentions), it made plenty of sense to them. Did you know they were watching over the sheep that were to be taken to the temple to be offerred as sacrifice for the community’s sins? That is what they did up to Jesus coming on the scene. Check any Old Testament reference for “sacrifice” and you’ll get animals being slaughtered for a sin offering. With Jesus going to the cross He did what no other priest before Him could do. Here’s some scripture that clarifies better. I’m thankful for God’s love for us that He would send us a means to become clean of our sins, and blown away that it would be through His son. Having Asher I have a greater sense of amazement in what He did.

Then let us all with one accord
Sing praises to our heavenly Lord
That hath made Heaven and earth of nought
And with his blood mankind has bought.
