MOAB. 3.23-3.26.07

Here’s the pictures…Distant Mike, Close Mike, and Me Mike D close beside and Mike C far, this was taken on our investigatory ride when the rain paused for a while on Friday afternoon. Going UP... As you can see, it was wet and mudville in places…

Fins N Things trail This is a section of the Fins and Things trail we did on super-wet Saturday

We didn’t do the whole porcupine rim trail due to some of the crew being not experienced enough. Besides the trek back into Moab at the end would have been beyond ability for most of us after the super-long descent. This is down the initial climb we did to the view-spot at the top of the trail: beyond there it’s all down as aforementioned. Back down Porcupine

One last pic here, from our 1/2 way point where we lunched before down the up portion. It seemed to take over 2 hours to get up to here, and felt like 10 minutes for me to get back down. 2.5 miles, 900 feet. Awesome! From Castle point

Three days and counting…

So I had a coffee at my buddy Brian’s house this eve, and can’t sleep. So just prior to writing this, I was thinking big-time about the weekend upcoming (as posted just prior). What camping gear need I bring? Do I want to bring my own tent? Will I need to wear more than my typical road-ride gear? etc, etc, etc. Here are a few pics of the the B.O.M.B. trip from 2005: going down, And another… Airtime Some sick stuff ehh? I didn’t take these shots, but rather they are from the pro-foto guy that accompanied the Believer’s On Mountain Bikes to Moab for their annual shin-dig. Eventually I’d like to have Jess and Asher up (alongside any other future groms) to do Moab with the BOMB gang. It’s craze, it’s a kine meet of all the BOMB chapters from all over the world, at some of God’s greatest trails. For more info on BOMB check HERE.

What I’m looking forward to maybe even more than the riding is the fellowship with some brothers I only see 52 times a year (if that!). If I’m really blessed, I’ll get a ride in with a few of the guys during the season, but usually it’s just Sundays at Church. Anyhoot, I oughta go try and sleep again, up early to serve at the rescue miss again, and don’t want to need a nappsie after i get back.

Shoes and pedals, for lots of medals!

Got my new road-shoes today, darn-tootin’ too! they feel fast, and incredibly comfortable. I didn’t have a reason to upgrade from toe-clips and the old-style cleats I’ve been using for 17 years. Sure, they fit kinda funny, were not the most comfortable, but sometimes when you have a multi-sport addiction you don’t replace things unless they break down. Well after my last ride out to Tijeras I found a gnarly split in the sole of my shoe. Like a massive crevice just above the heel, these shoes were done. I MacGyver’d a short-term fix with some gorilla (snot) glue for a fingers-jaunt with a buddy, but no-go. Unsucessful surgury Notice the broken cleat-action. Considering these lasted as long as they did, I was able to justify spending for the better product/features was a worthy investment. So into history these are cast, (check the old specialized “flag”logo, ‘member that?) The beat dogs Cast you peeps at my newness.

While I was at it, clipless shoes need clipless pedals right? While I had been enjoying the Crank Brothers Eggbeaters on my mountain steed, having no real “platform” to stand on when not clipped in got bothersome, especially during climbs. On road-riding the foot-pedal connection isn’t as often a disconnect, although I bet there are some road-riders out there that “dab”, I’m not one of them. Solution: get the Crank Bros. Smarty’s for the mtn. bike, and swap out the toe-clip (makes me think of “toe-pick” from Cutting Edge) with the eggies for the road-beastie. Fun-fun, upgrades are the shizzle, especially when there is definate measureable performance enhancements in the mix. Here’s the Smarty’s.

and here’s the two steeds, with the view of their new “stirrups”.Steeds with new shoes!

Another Fingers route has been compiled, if your up for some punishment ala hill-climbs, I’m already leading a couple of brothers, do join! OUR RIDE IS STILL ON, BUT DIFFERENT ROUTE HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED We’ve tenatively set it for Oct 14 @ 7:30am, so if your interested reply and we’ll discuss location information private-like.
